Cranbrook Engineering started selling and servicing mowers
and
Garden Machines back in 1958,
so we know a lot about it. We sell many major brands and all
the usual types of machine.
Cranbrook Engineering began life in 1927 as a garage.
When we branched out into lawnmowers and garden machinery in 1958, the choice was
comparatively
limited.
Cylinder mowers were more common than rotary mowers in those days, and brushcutters and
shredders weren't generally available.
Engines were not always easy to start and their power was modest compared with their
weight.
We realized that a lot of the expertise learnt in selling car parts applied as well
to mower spare parts.
This led us to start stocking the spare parts of the day,
and especially to take on the franchise for Briggs & Stratton engines.
The result was that we were soon wholesaling to the trade as well as retailing to the
public. We joined the top ten of Briggs & Stratton dealers.
Gradually we took on many brands and became well known for our ability to obtain
spare parts quickly and accurately.
Today, we are supplying parts for many machines and (exclusively) for Golden Star brushcutters and
hedgetrimmers.
Garden machinery now is more varied than ever before.
Rotary mowers of course come with wheels or rear rollers (for striped grass),
and there are petrol, battery or mains electric models.
Apart from mowers, there are brushcutters, chainsaws, power pruners,
hedge trimmers, shredders, chippers, scarifiers, lawn rakers, cultivators (tillers), and
blower/ vacuums (sometimes classified as leaf collectors). We have added sprayers,
spreaders, rollers, trailers and handcarts to our inventory. Quite a recent
and clever tool is the long reach hedge trimmer which can be adjusted to many angles and
can cut high hedges or unreachable shrubbery.
They are all explained in our e-Showroom.
Brushcutters usually double as strimmers. 'Strimmer' is short for 'string
trimmer'
and is, of course, a nylon line or string whirling round so fast that it cuts soft
material.
It is all too easy to damage bark with a strimmer, so a little care is needed.
Although cylinder mowers are expensive to sharpen,
they still give the very best finish and there is still a fair choice available.
Engines now are very powerful, reliable and light.
There is a trend towards four-stroke engines because it is easier to reduce emissions
from them. But two-stroke engines are more powerful for their weight
(or lighter for the same power); and poor starting is a thing of the past.
Nowadays all engines by good makers start well and run cleanly,
but of course they need maintenance like any other machine.
