We keep various machines for improving turf health. A scarifier/ dethatcher/ lawn raker will scratch out thatch and let in air and nutrients. Some can slit the soil to quite a depth: in fact this is the true scarifier. Aerators cut slits or take plugs out of the soil - again to let in air and nutrients.
