Certain garden machines are more hazardous than others, but you should consider safety in all cases. Where and how you use a machine is important, but so is Personal Protective Equipment. Strong boots and gloves usually apply. Any machinery can cause hearing damage, depending on exposure, and ear defenders are an inexpensive accessory.
Chainsaw users should wear a forestry helmet (complete head, eye and ear protection), protective trousers and special gloves as a minimum. Brushcutters/line trimmers throw debris, so never use one near other people or pets; and protect yourself with goggles at the very least.
